Although all athletes will eventually need fuel replacements to continue exercising, athletes with diabetes may need them sooner. Glucose and fat are the major nutrients used by the body as fuel for exercise; they become available predominantly from carbohydrate and fat, and minimally from protein food sources. The utilization of these fuel sources is determined by the type and duration of activity.
