What's happening to mealtime U.S.A.?

Nationwide studies by Ladies Home Journal (LHJ) and Woman's Day (WD) suggest that women are still the primary purchasers and preparers of food and families are still eating together. Working women differ from housewives by shopping for food less frequently, spending less time preparing meals, serving wine or beer with dinner more often, dining out for breakfast or skipping it, serving beef for dinner more often, entertaining more often, and using fewer convenience foods, according to the LHJ study. Families eat cake more often than ice cream or fruit for dessert; 40% of the households surveyed skipped vegetables, dessert, and at least one meal. The WD survey found that time and money were the strongest influences on women shoppers. Women tend to shop when their husbands get paid, but shop without their husbands, mistrust trading stamps and games, and are now more interested in nutrition.
