Age, masticatory ability and swallowing
1983
The interrelationships between age, masticatory ability of both complete and compromised natural dentitions and of dentures, selection of foods and nutritional status are discussed. A number of research studies reviewed report abnormalities in lip posture, masticatory muscle and tongue functions and swallowing as age increases. Masticatory efficiency was related directly to the number of teeth present. The conclusion drawn is that as aging occurs deterioration of functions results. (kbc)
