Insecticide efficacy for control of Lygus bugs (Heteroptera: Miridae) on white lupin, Lupinus albus L

Lygus hesperus Knight and L. elisus Van Duzee are the major insect pests attacking the foliage and seed pods on white lupin, Lupinus albus cv. Ultra in eastern Washington. Mid-April seeding of the thermosensitive 'Ultra' resulted in the increase of a lygus bug population that coincided with primary pod set and flowering on racemes of lower secondary and tertiary branches. Of the insecticides tested against lygus bugs, their order of residual toxicity was acephate greater than chlorpyrifos greater than carbofuran greater than dimethoate greater than methomyl greater than ABG-6162 greater than fenvalerate. All of these materials effectively suppressed nymphal and adult stages of lygus bugs through the critical pod-set period. These reductions resulted in yield increases of 1.1 to 43 times over the untreated check plots.
