Bridelia ferruginea is a traditional African medicine plant involved in treatment of several diseases. It is used as a purgative and has diuretic properties. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of an aqueous extract of the stem bark of this plant on renal function in the male Wistar rats. Twenty-four hours after the administration in rat, the aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea (SEA) causes an increase in creatinine excretion in the urine of 88.10% (P < 0.01). SEA provokes a significant increase (P < 0.05) in creatinine clearance. It does not significantly modify the content and urea clearance. The aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea seems to have no adverse effect on renal function and weight in rats after 24h of treatment.
