Surface hardening of steel has been achieved by nitriding using an atmospheric-pressure plasma. Spraying the pulsed-arc nitrogen plasma jet onto a steel surface produces the diffusion layer and the compound layer, provided that hydrogen gas is added to the ambient nitrogen atmosphere. The entire surface of a disk sample of 20mm in diameter can be hardened although the thickness of the hardened layer is less where the distance from the center of jet spraying is larger.
