Dental caries and obesity are major nutritional disorders of modern childhood that mainly stem from social pressures, highly processed foods, and poor eating habits. In Australia, 60-70% of school children, many of whom eat no breakfast, buy lunch from school managed canteens, which sell a high proportion of undesirable foods. Children also do not eat vegetables, and milk in quantities that meet recommended standards. Breakfast cereals and bread, which are usually eaten for breakfast, have reduced fiber content and seed hull factors and have added sugars. Prevention through restriction of refined sugar intake, increased whole grain and fiber intake, and elimination of snacking between meals can be achieved with a good breakfast and a nutritionally adequate lunch. Furthermore, parents should know more about child nutrition, nutrition education should be promoted, the food industry should produce more low sugar, high fiber foods, and a nutrition policy and subsidized school breakfast and lunch program are needed.
