The response of flax to rates and formulations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid

This paper presents the results obtained from the treatment of seven varieties of commonly grown flax using three formulations of 2,4-D at four rates of application applied at early prebud stage. The characters studied were yield of grain and straw, maturity, bushel and 1,000 seed weight, percentage of plants showing stem curvature and oil percentage, iodine number, and viability-of seed from treated and untreated plots. The conclusions arrived at are: 1. In all the characters studied excepting straw yield and bushel weight there was a differential response of the varieties to the application of 2,4-D. The viability of seed from treated plots remained unaffected. 2. Of the seven varieties tested, Redwing, Koto, Dakota, and Sheyenne were relatively more tolerant than Crystal, B5128, and Minerva except that Dakota was less tolerant then B5128 in oil content and percentage of plants showing stem curvature. 3. At practical rates of application, maturity and height of plant were not affected enough by the treatments to be an important consideration. 4. Four ounces per acre of 2,4-D acid as sodium salt, amine salt, and ester did not reduce the yield of tolerant varieties but did reduce yields of susceptible ones. 5. At equivalent rates generally sodium salt was the least injurious of the three formulations and ester the most. It is possible that lower rates of ester are just as effective for killing weeds and less liable to injure the crop. 6. A variety of abnormalities occurred in plants as a result of the treatment but these were neither numerous nor intense enough to be of any practical importance.
