Soil development in kaolin spoil1

We observed and studied the development of soil horizons in kaolin spoil ranging in age from 15 to 50 years. Illuviation of clay is evident by thin clay coatings on ped faces and in wormholes and channels. Illuviation of iron was confirmed in 50-year-old spoil by electron probe microanalysis. Organic carbon content exceeds 3 percent in the surface of the oldest spoil and decreases regularly with depth. The soil surface has characteristics of an umbric epipedon. Granular structure is evident in surface horizons, as is blocklike structure in the subsurface layers. Some of the blocklike units in subsurface horizons appear to be fragments of low-grade kaolin. Recycling of calcium, magnesium, and potassium are evident in the 30-and 50-year-old spoil.
