The Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) is the food industry's most powerful trade association. With great consistency GMA influences Congress to pass bills that it supports or kill bills that it doesn't support. Now GMA is lobbying to stop the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) from restricting television commercials of sugared products aimed at children. GMA is also pushing for concessions in food labeling legislation proposed by the FTC. GMA is made up of 134 large corporations collecting over $2 million in annual dues. GMA has a strong grass-roots program contacting congressmen directly. GMA has instigated lawsuits to prevent U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's funding research by consumer groups. GMA was the largest contributor of honoraria to U.S. Senators in 1976.
