Premenstrual syndrome: A Nutritional answer?

Probably 50% or more of all women suffer from "premenstrual syndrome" (PMS), beginning at ovulation during the menstrual cycle luteal phase and typified by water retention, bloating, constipation, headache, irritability, and mood changes. Some physicians feel that PMS is caused by an inbalance of estrogens over progesterones, suggesting progesterone therapy. In addition to such therapy, most treatment centers and many private physicians are recommending nutritional therapy, including low-sodium diets, high-fiber, high-complex carbohydrate diets, and avoidance of sugar, alcohol, and preservatives. Vitamin B-6 supplements, however, have not been shown to be helpful, and excess vitamin B-6 has caused nervous system impairment in a number of women. Women suffering from PMS should get a thorough physical, a stress or psychological exam, stress management therapy, and supplements of a one-a-day formulation not exceeding 100% of the vitamin and mineral RDA's.
