Diminished phospholipid incorporation of essential fatty acids in peripheral blood leucocytes from patients with Crohn's disease: correlation with zinc depletion

Since leucocyte and muscle zinc (Zn) depletion have been demonstrated in Crohn's disease, a study of the metabolism of radio-labeled linoleic and arachidonic acids by Crohn's disease leucocytes was carried out to assess whether essential fatty acid metabolism is also abnormal, and to assess the relationship of differences in the metabolism of these fatty acids to the Zn status of the Crohn's disease leucocytes. The results indicated that peripheral blood leucocytes from 16 Crohn's disease patients (9 women, 7 men) have an abnormal fatty acid metabolism, and that the uptake of arachidonic acid by leucocyte phosphatidylcholine varies with the leucocyte Zn content. Possible implications of these results are discussed.(wz)
