The lowering of plasma cholesterol by sucrose polyester in subjects consuming diets with 800, 300, or less than 50 mg of cholesterol per day

The cholesterol-lowering potential of sucrose polyester (SPE) was assessed in normolipidemic men. In the first phase, the subjects consumed for 10 days a diet containing 800 or 300 mg of cholesterol per day, or for 21 days a diet containing less than 50 mg of cholesterol. Subsequently over 3 consecutive 10-day periods 8, 16, or 25 g of liquid SPE or 19, 38, or 62 g of an 80/20 mixture of SPE and hydrogenated palm oil, were added daily to these diets. All but one treatment group showed a decrease in plasma total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Significant decreases in plasma cholesterol were observed despite the ingestion of a high cholesterol diet. SPE reduced plasma vitamin A and E levels; plasma high density lipoprotein cholesterol and trigylcerides were not changed. Short-term safety and effectiveness studies indicate SPE man have potential value as a cholesterol-lowering agent.
