Consumer awareness of culling and animal welfare

Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute infectious disease of livestock that causes massive economic damage. It must be managed globally to prevent its transmission and promote eradication. In the 2018 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, approximately 11,726 livestock were slaughtered, buried, or incinerated. Culling must be governed by regulations, owing to a number of issues concerning the decision to cull, culling methods, effect of participants on culling, secondary environmental pollution problems such as soil and groundwater pollution, budget and resource distribution for disease prevention, and the social and economic impact in rural areas. To solve these secondary problems, there must be a social consensus of opinion, and a plan must be established to help those experiencing these issues. The aim of this study was to investigate the culling method suitable for disease eradication and public's perception of the culling location, as well as the perception of animal welfare.
