Value-added Diversified Floriculture – Scope of New Products for Higher Returns to Small and Marginal Floricultural Farmers of West Bengal

The potential of producing value-added floricultural products has been assessed in West Bengal by studying the status of floriculture industry which included available infrastructural and marketing facilities as well. The study is based on secondary data collected from various published sources, websites, etc. The study has revealed that Indian floriculture industry has experienced a significant growth during the past five years (2005–06 to 2010–11), with increase in area from 129 thousands ha to 191 thousand ha, loose flower production from 6.5 lakh Mt to 10.3 lakh Mt, and cut flower production from 2920 millions (No.) to 6903 millions (No.). The paper has listed some value-added diversified floricultural products like pot pourri, natural dyes, essential oils, dry flowers, etc. The paper has specifically studied the case of West Bengal which ranks first in cut flower production in India. The study has identified constraints in floriculture and has listed some suggestions for the developemt of this sector.
