Issues and concerns of nutrition research and education in the past, present, and future are highlighted. Early research focused primarily on nutrients as isolated factors. The interrelationships among nutrients as they exist in foods and as they function in body metabolism and health are receiving attention in present times. Four factors regarding nutrition education programs are listed. The impact of the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health and the National Dietary Goals is discussed. Favorable circumstances and limitations influencing future actions are mentioned.
