A study of hemoglobin A1 (HbA1) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) to assess metabolic control, evaluated the effect of a regular, 30-minute vigorous treadmill exercise program (3 times/week for 12 weeks) on 9 insulin-dependent diabetic (IDD) children (ages 5-11) vs. 10 non-diabetic controls. HbA1 and FBG decreased significantly in the exercising diabetics relative to the control group, (with no change noted in HgA1 and FBG in the controls over the study period), while the peak oxygen consumption was significantly increased over baseline value. The results indicated that regular physical exercise beneficially influences metabolic control and cardiovascular fitness in young IDD children. (wz)
