Meeting America's 1990 nutrition goals: we'll need a strong finish

A brief overview provides a progress report on how Americans are faring in their progress to attain 1990 goals for health improvement set out in a 1980 report by the US Public Health Service (PHS) ("Promoting Health/Preventing Disease: Objectives for the Nation"), and describes how the PHS plans to set new goals for the year 2000. While surveys show that Americans have made some progress in improving their nutrition in certain areas (a number of which are discussed), a stronger effort is needed to meet the goals set for the end of the decade. PHS plans to hold regional hearings during 1987-88 to determine its goals for the year 2000.(wz)
