The Composition of excess weight in obese women estimated by body density, total body water and total body potassium
1984
Webster, J.D. | Hesp, R. | Garrow, J.S.
When body fat content of 104 women varying from lean to obese was estimated from body density, values were lower than when estimated from body water and were higher when estimated from total body potassium (K). Adjusting body weight and body fat for height (dividing by height-squared) revealed good correlations between body weight and body fat for fat estimates based on body density, K, or water. The results indicate that tissue weight in obese women of similar height is comprised of 70-78% fat and 22-30% lean. On this basis it is suggested that lean tissue loss in obese women in weight reduction therapy not exceed 22%. (wz)
