Effect of cold temperatures on body energy balance

Energy expenditure in cold climates is higher than in temperate areas due to more strenuous activity. Energy intake increases, likewise, with a prolonged cold stress. Initial body weight increases in polar camps, then either stabilizes or begins to fall. Long-term stays at polar base, however, result in an increase both in body weight and skinfold thickness. A significant corelation has been found between energy intake and windchill in Artic climates. The results of related studies also are discussed. (wz)
