A brief report by a practicing dietitian addresses the problems encountered by dietitians in attempting to translate dietary guidelines into proper food selections by individuals. Specific attention is focused on: the selection of foods based on nutrient requirements; practical problems encountered in employing dietary guidelines; and a description of a program, conducted in Cambridge, England, for effectively implementing dietary guidelines in the community. A workplace and a college food service are described as two successful examples of implementation.(wz)
