Evaluation of vegetative growth and fruit chemistry of some raspberry and blackberry cultivars grown in southern Poland

An experiment comparing the performance of floricane and primocane red raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.), black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis L.), and blackberries (Rubus subgenus Rubus L.) was carried out in southern Poland climatic condition at The Fruit Experiment Station Institute of Horticulture Ltd., Brzezna, during 2011-2013. The number of canes, number of leaves per cane and height of plants were compared. Marketable yield, weight of 100 fruits, soluble solids (%Brix) and total phenolic content were measured. Among primocane raspberries, 'Polka' had the highest marketable yield, shoot height and the most canes per plant. 'Poranna Rosa' had the largest number of leaves per cane while 'Polesie' had the biggest fruits and the highest soluble solid level. 'Willamette' had the most canes, the largest number of leaves per cane and the highest yield among floricane red raspberries, 'Laszka' had the biggest fruits, and 'Benefis' had the highest soluble solid content. Among black raspberries, 'Bristol' had the most canes, the largest number of leaves per cane, the tallest canes, greatest yield, and the highest weight of 100 fruits. 'Litacz' black raspberries had the uppermost soluble solid content. Within blackberries 'Ruczaj' had the most canes per plant; 'Gazda' the lowest. 'Leśniczanka' blackberries had the most leaves per cane, and 'Gazda' blackberry fruits had the highest soluble solids. Blackberry fruits contained significantly more phenolic compounds than the fruits of red raspberry. The black raspberry cultivars 'Litacz' and 'Bristol' were extraordinary rich in potentially health-beneficial phenolics.
