Understanding and controlling transgene expression
1995
Meyer, P.
Instability of transgene expression is frequently observed in transgenic plants, and is commonly called 'gene silencing'. However, silencing that occurs at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level is not limited to transgenes; endogenous genes can also be suppressed after the transfer of a homologous transgene. Inactivation of transgene expression is often accompanied by an increase in DNA methylation, especially if silencing occurs at the transcriptional level. A comparative study of different silencing systems should help to define the critical requirements for the reliable expression of recombinant constructs in transgenic plants.
