The genetic control of time to germination in tomato

The time to germination of seeds derived from crosses between Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium and five varieties of L. esculentum was analysed in the F1 and F22 generations and in seeds derived from inter-crossing the F1 hybrids. Inheritance of time to germination was largely additive and closely related to seed size. There were marked maternal and paternal effects particularly where L. pimpinellifolium was involved. Variation in time to germination could easily be modified by selection but probably at the expense of seed size and embryo size at emergence. Seed characteristics are a compromise between the contending advantages of size at emergence, rapidity of germination, and the number of seeds produced.
