Diversity of soil inhabiting nematodes in Kotli Kala Ban forest in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir State, India

The paper presents the results of the analysis of seventy soil samples collected at random from forest of Kotli Kala Ban area of Rajouri district. In total, 49 nematode genera were recorded, with Rhabditida representing the highest percentage (44.4%), followed by Mononchida (20%), Tylenchida (12.2%), Dorylairnida and Areolairnida (10%), Monhysterida and Enoplida (2%). In terms of trophic groupings, the bacteriovore genera representing the highest percentage (62%), followed by predators (15%), omnivores (1l.7%) and plant parasites (10%). Bacteriovore were the most dominant group, likely due to less acidic conditions of the soils, favouring the bacterial decomposition pathway in this region. Shannon-Weaver and Inverse Simpson diversity indices showed that this region has a high nematode diversity of 3.58 and 28.57 respectively; while the maturity index showed fewer (2.61-3.75) disturbances in this region.
