Optimum nitrogen fertilizer rate for peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) in Ontario, Canada

A field experiment was conducted in 1990 and 1991, on Fox loamy sand soil in Ontario, Canada to study the effects of different rates (0, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 kg/ha) of nitrogen (N) fertilization on the yield and chemical characteristics of the essential oil of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.). Oil yields increased with N fertilization up to 180 kg/ha after which increases had no influence on yield. Many of the chemical constituents of the essential oil were not influenced by N fertilization; however, for those constituents which did change the differences were consistent with those due to delays in maturity as N fertilization was increased.
