Copper, zinc, and magnesium content of breast milk of Indian women
1980
Rajalakshmi, K. | Srikantia, S.G.
The copper, zinc and magnesium content of breast milk from Indian women of different socioeconomic status was compared. Levels of these tract elements in milk did not differ between urban and rural low income women, but copper and zinc content of milk from poor women was significantly lower than that of high income women until 3 months of lactation. Daily variations in concentration were not significant. Levels of these elements were lower in mature milk than in colostrums. Concentrations of copper and zinc in serum did not correlate with those in milk, suggesting that active transport of these trace elements may occur during lactation. Intake of trace elements in breast milk by Indian infants appears to meet nutritional requirements.
