The efficacy of PKU-2, a phenylalanine-free formula recently released in the U.S., was investigated in 10 children (ages 1.4 to 11.3) over a 1-year period. Blood specimens were obtained during initial visits; nutrient calculations and data analysis were performed on a computer system; anthropometric measurements were recorded and calculation of nutrient intake was analysed from a 3-day diet. Most variables remained normal or unchanged throughout the study; however, a significant difference was noted in the serum urea nitrogen measurement at the 12-month visit (4.0 +/- 1.0 mmol/L) compared with baseline value (5.0 +/- 1.0 mmol/L); intakes of all vitamins were at or greater than 100% RDAs; and significant changes seen in intakes of iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium, and phosphorus in patients receiving PKU-2. PKU-2 is considered appropriate for children with PKU who are over 3 years old and may prove beneficial for overweight children with PKU.
