Malnutrition associated with a formula of barley water, corn syrup, and whole milk

Five cases of undernutrition in infants (1-7 months old) seemed to be related to a recommended formula containing barley water, whole milk, and corn syrup or honey. Three of these infants showed subnormal growth, 2 were classified in the category of failure to thrive, and 2 had macrocytic hypochromic anemia. After treatment for various infections, the underweight infants responded well to standard infant formula. Analysis of the barley water formula revealed that it was deficient in iron, and vitamins C and A, but it had twice the sodium content of human milk. These cases illustrate the need, particularly during the weaning stages, to collect dietary histories for infants because of their sensitivity to nutrient deprivation and dehydration. (cj)
