Variability and Divergence Analysis in Barley (H. vulgare L.) under Irrigated Condition

An experiment was conducted with twenty four strains of barley during rabi 2006–07. Studies on variability, heritability and genetic advance showed that biological yield per plant, grain weight per ear, number of productive tillers per plant and grain yield per plant are having considerable importance to the breeders for selection. Correlation studies showed that positive and significant correlations were observed between number of productive tillers and grain yield per plant, ear length and number of grains per ear, ear length and grain weightper ear, and between biological yield perplant and grain yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis suggested that biological yield per plant and number of productive tillers is showing positive and significant overall effects on grain yield per plant. After D² analysis twenty four strains are grouped into five clusters. Cluster I had highest genotypes (9). The genotypes falling in cluster III had the maximum divergence. The cluster IV and III are exhibiting high mean for most of the characters. For varietal improvement, the hybridization among genotypes falling in clusters III and IV should be done as they are the most divergence clusters.
