Plasmodium knowlesi, gene coding for circumsporozoite antigen was inserted into vaccinia virus genome under control of defined vaccinia virus promoter, cells infected with recombinant virus synthesized polypeptides of 53,000 to 56,000 daltons that reacted with monoclonal antibody against repeating epitope of malaria protein, rabbits vaccinated with recombinant virus produced antibodies that bound specifically to sporozoites, data provide evidence for expression of cloned malaria gene in mammalian cells and illustrate potential of vaccinia virus recombinants as live malaria vaccines
