Studies on prevalence and pathology of mixed infections of reticuloendotheliosis and Marek's disease under field conditions

The study was conducted on 1619 poultry carcasses presented for post-mortem examination. Necropsy revealed tumours in visceral organs of 103 birds and a prevalence of 6.36%. Samples were collected from 34 cases which formed the basis of the present study. Grossly, liver, spleen, kidneys, ovaries, lungs, proventriculus and intestine showed either diffuse enlargement, enlargement with embedded foci or enlargement with varying sized greyish-white foci/nodules. Sciatic nerves were enlarged in two cases, and no gross lesions were detected in brain. Microscopically, focal to diffuse infiltration of pleomorphic cells was observed in liver, spleen, kidneys, ovary heart, lungs, proventriculus and intestines. Brain showed gliosis, satellitosis, neuronophagia, perivascular cuffing, and edema. The etiology of avian neoplasms could not be ascertained on the basis of gross and histopathological lesions. Immnunohistochemical staining using specific antisera against MDV and REV revealed positive reactivity for MDV and REV antigens in the cytoplasm and nucleus of the infiltrating cells in different visceral organs. Out of 34 cases, 28/34 (82.3%) cases were positive for both MDV and RE, while one case was positive for MDV alone. It was concluded that mixed infection of REV and MD are common under field conditions, and immunohistochemistry was quite effective for differential diagnosis of mixed avian oncogenic virus infections.
