As a step towards constructing strains of Z. mobilis capable of converting cellulose to ethanol, DNA fragments encoding endoglucanase (from Xanthomonas albilineans) and beta-glucosidase (from either X. albilineans or Pseudomonas sp.) were linked on the same vector and transferred to Z. mobilis. All clones expressed endoglucanase. beta-Glucosidase was only produced by clones containing the Xanthomonas gene, and when two copies of this gene were present the beta-glucosidase activity was higher.
