Biochemical blood parameters in pigs: 1 Repeatability and effects of breed, litter number and sampling time

SUMMARY: Blood samples were drawn repeatedly from sows to detect quantitative variation in several blood parameters associated with disease resistance, performance or both. Pure Norwegian Landrace (L) sows, crosses between L and Duroc (L*D) and crosses between L and Yorkshire (L*Y) were compared. Blood samples were collected one and three months after farrowing, and repeatability, as well as effects of breed, of litter number and time of blood sampling, were estimated. Investigated were alanine aminotransferase, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, aspartate aminotransferase, calcium, cholesterol, complement factor C₃, creatine kinase, creatinine, free fatty acids, gamma glutamyl transferase, globulin, glutathione peroxidase, haemolytic complement activity, IgG, lactate dehydrogenase, lysozyme activity, magnesium, total protein, triglycerides and selenium. The repeatability varied from 0.06 (creatine kinase) to 0.66 (selenium). Several blood-parameters were influenced by breed (alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, calcium, C₃, gamma glutamyl transferase, globulin, IgG, lactate dehydrogenase, lysozyme, magnesium, selenium and total protein). Thirteen of the blood parameters were influenced by litter number, and fifteen were influenced by time of blood sampling after farrowing. The moderate and high repeatabilities, and the breed differences suggest that the levels of several of the investigated blood parameters is genetically regulated.
