Recent research on the molecular aspects of insulin action on hexose transport is reviewed. Kinetic analysis of adipocyte hexose transport has been refined and very precise estimations have been obtained. A number of studies have explored insulin action on hexose transport and its deactivation following the removal of insulin, membrane binding sites, the reactions of antibodies on cellular processes, and the effects of insulin on calcium dynamics. Extensive data have been developed on the role of ATP stores in muscle and fat cells. Other major areas of research include hexose transport properties in purified adipocyte plasma membranes, insulin receptors and the hexose transporter, transport mechanism studies on the natural peptide ionophores, and models of increased hexose transport activity.
