Attrition in a behavioral weight-control program: A comparison of dropouts and completers

A total of 161 treatment dropouts from a 12-session behavioral weight-control program were compared to 110 treatment completers with respect to demographic and weight variables, and scores on an eating questionnaire. Demographic variables included: initial weight, % overweight, age, sex, occupation, education, and number of prior attempts to lose weight. The most notable finding was that dropouts and completers did not markedly differ. The largest differences between the 2 groups was occupation, with the completers containing more women working in the home than the dropouts. Further research on the cognitive factors in weight control is recommended. (wz)
