Shear properties of 3D-printed grid beetle elytron plates

For the first time, this paper reports the results of a study of the mechanical shear behavior of grid beetle elytron plates (GBEPs), which are lightweight and high-strength bionic structures with excellent compressive and flexural properties. The shear properties, failure modes and shear mechanism of 3D-printed GBEP and grid plate (GP) specimens with the same wall thickness are investigated via shear experiments. The results show that the specific shear strength, specific energy absorption and shear modulus of the GBEP are 35%, 37% and 33% higher than those of the GP, respectively. Compared with the GP, the buckling deformations of the GBEP honeycomb walls occur later, and the amplitudes are smaller. For both types of sandwich plates, failure starts with the buckling of honeycomb walls. Oblique shear cracks are observed in the fractures. The best shear performance is observed when ηc, i.e., the ratio of r (centerline radius of the trabeculae) to L (length of the quadrilateral unit), is 0.20. An analysis of the buckling and failure of the honeycomb walls reveals that the reason for this observation and the deformation process of the sandwich plate cores are related to the synergistic mechanism between the trabeculae and honeycomb walls. The reasons for the superior shear properties of the GBEP compared to the GP are confirmed for the first time. The results of this study will enrich knowledge of the bionic applications of beetle elytra, provide useful guidance for the design of lightweight sandwich structures and accelerate the application of BEPs in many fields, such as aircraft, ships, train locomotives and wind turbines.
