Leaf Characteristics of Four Flue-Cured Tobacco Varieties According to Stalk Positions. I. Phytosterols and Petroleum Ether Extracts

Phytosterol content and petroleum ether extracts varied in leaves from various stalk positions of three flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) varieties and one breeding line, ‘Coker 139,’ ‘SC 58,’ ‘NC 95,’ and LN 38. These varieties differ widely in alkaloid content. Petroleum ether extracts were not associated with alkaloid content. Phytosterol content of leaves of various stalk positions exhibited the same general distribution patterns among different varieties, while petroleum ether extracts exhibited the same general distribution patterns in three varieties but not in LN 38. Four phytosterol fractions, including cholesterol, campesterol, β-sitosterol, and stigmasterol, were determined. Cholesterol and campesterol were fairly constant in leaves of various stalk positions; however, an increase of β-sitosterol and a decrease of stigmasterol in leaves from bottom to top stalk positions was noted.
