Psychosocial stress in pregnancy and its relation to low birth weight

A prospective study to assess the possible relationship of psychosocial stress during pregnancy to low birth weight included a design involving an unselected population of women who were interviewed at least twice during pregnancy by a single interviewer, recording number, nature, and subjective effect of any life events, social class, and cigarette smoking habits. Premature birth and low birth weight correlated with more objective life events, but not with anxiety state or social class. Cigarette smoking was, however, the strongest predictor of low birth weight. (wz)
