Temporal Changes in the Content of Polyarenes in Samples of the Seasonally Thawed Layer from Tundra Peatlands during a Model Experiment

A model experiment on the decomposition of organic matter in peat collected from a seasonally thawed layer of a tundra peatland on the coast of the Barents Sea was conducted. The data obtained indicate a constant variation in the composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during the experiment. The changes in the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be described by a sinusoidal curve with several maxima and minima. We assume that the presence of extrema in the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the recombination of their composition during the experiment is explained by the fact that, in the absence of light hydrocarbons easily accessible for decomposition, microorganisms began to decompose heavier structures, and then, with a decrease in their content, high-molecular-weight organic substances of peat. To confirm the results obtained, additional studies of the enzymatic activity of soils are planned.
