A survey assessed the current status of third-party reimbursement for nutrition care services and underlines the urgent necessity for educating insurers, physicians, clients, and administrators. Guidelines for professional dietitians are discussed. Attention is given to specific sources of health care coverage, (Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, commercial carriers, workers' compensation, Veterans Administration) reimbursement, and limitations. Aspects of outpatient diabetes education also are discussed. Payer restrictions are highlighted. (wz)
