Constraints in Adoption of Recommended Kitchen Gardening Techniques

Kitchen gardening may prove to be a boon for rural folk to meet daily dietary requirements of fruit and vegetable. Still, there are few takers for this concept. The major reason for non employing of kitchen gardeningby the rural people may be due to lack of technical know-how. The present study was conducted with the objective to study the perceived constraints in adoption of kitchen gardening by the rural masses. 25 farm families those who were already practicing kitchen gardening were randomly selectedfrom each village. 100 respondentsfrom four villages were interviewed to collect data. The constraints as perceived by respondents scored on the basis of magnitude of the problem. The study highlighted that input constraint was most serious constraint followed by general constraints, technical constraints, socio-cultural constraints, post-harvest constraints. Thenon - availability of quality planting material of fruits and seeds of HYVs of vegetable, lesser availability of canal water and Brackish underground water, lack of knowledge about improved varieties, seed rate and sowing time, lack of knowledge about seed treatment, high soil pH and EC, lack of knowledge regarding major pests and diseases identification and their management and lack of interest among rural youth were reported major bottlenecks in successful adoption of kitchen gardening.
