Tourism industry effects on socio-cultural activities of host communities: evidence from Cross River State, Nigeria

The tourism industry has been touted to have huge significant impact on the social and economic growth of local people across the world. This study is carried out to examine the role of the tourism industry on sustenance of socio-cultural development in Cross River State, Nigeria. Primary and secondary sources of data were employed to elicit information for the study. The primary sources comprised of the use of questionnaire survey, interview sessions and direct field observation while the secondary sources involved the use of documented information published in articles, books and in registry of tourist outfits within the study locations. The study observed that some socio-cultural values of the people (traditional marriages, traditional building pattern, family income, traditional landscape design, art and crafts) were positively influenced by interaction of tourists’ with the host communities while other values (traditional belief system, traditional religious worship, native food, local drinks, traditional dress style, traditional legal system, level of promiscuity) were negatively affected by the interaction between the tourists and the local residents’. The study also observed that most of the tourists’ that visited the region got awareness of the attractions through the social media (38%), electronic media (22%), friends and family (16%), internet (10%), print media (10%) and sign posts (4%). Based on these findings, the study recommends that more cultural activities, better marketing and promotional strategies should be adopted to ensure more visitors and tourists visits to the region throughout the year.
