The food label as nutrition policy
1992
Rosenberg, I.H.
In November 1990, the U.S. Congress mandated an extensive food label reform. The goals: to enhance the nutritional knowledge of the public and to thereby improve the health and well-being of the American people. The Food and Drug Administration, after far-reaching deliberation, including internal and external studies, has announced the most extensive and complex regulatory proposals and guidelines on labeling in its history. The content is summarized in this issue by Dr. Lester Crawford, formerly an official of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which agreed in 1988 to undertake this project along with the Department of Health and Human Services.
