Dietary fibre
1977
Present knowledge about dietary fiber and hypotheses that need further study are reviewed. The effect of fiber on colonic function is now beyond doubt, and there are clear indications of changes in carbohydrate and lipid absorption which could be important in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The potential adverse effects of fiber and its associated substances on mineral absorption need urgent exploration. Fiber research has expanded knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology and widened the scope of nutrition.
