A nation sweet on sugar

The sweet tooth is sovereign over the American palate. American food manufacturers have taken full advantage of this national craving. Sugar is added to many processed foods like hot dogs and salad dressings. Americans consume about 135 pounds of sugar per year. Sugar adds nothing but empty calories to the diet resulting possibly in obesity, diabetes or dental caries. Honey and brown sugar are little better. Actions a concerned consumer can take include: 1) avoid presweetened products; 2) write companies protesting unnecessary addition of sugar; 3) question school lunches served to children; and 4) write to government officials to encourage food labeling.
