Chrysanthemum growing in the GDR--making individual production stages more efficient

As in many other fields of industry and agriculture, there is a planned approach to the production of flowers and ornamental plants for the domestic market in the GDR. In the output of cut flowers, the chrysanthemum is second only to the carnation. It is grown on an area of 233 ha, and about 84 million stems are produced per year (1985 figures). A total of 86 million young plants were grown in goverment-recognized establishments in 1986. The largest of these is a state farm, VEG Saatzucht Zierpflanzen Erfurt. In the GDR, all plant material for gardening and farming and all seeds are developed and produced under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Processing. On the production side, the Ministry works through an association of nationally-owned enterprises which includes production units for flowers and ornamental plants.
