The food dollar - where it is spent

A USDA survey shows that in 1977 Americans spent $186.4 billion on domestic, farm-originated food products. 67.4% of the expenditures were made in retail food stores. 32.6% of the food dollar was spent in the away-from-home market. Farmers received 30.8% of the total. Packaging equalled 8.7% of the consumer bill; advertising accounted for 1.5%. All corporations, from packers and manufacturers through wholesalers and retailers, received 2.4%. The survey substantiates that in 1977 1) away-from-home eating is increasing; 2) labor is receiving more of the food dollar and the farmers are receiving less; 3) packaging costs more; advertising costs less. Food dollar comparisons are made for 1970 through 1977.
