Effects of maternal dietary intake on human milk composition

In viewing the effects of maternal dietary intake on human milk composition, several nutrients were analyzed. The results showed that the magnitude of influence varied among nutrients. Concentrations of fatty acids, fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins in human milk appear significantly affected by the levels to which they appear in the maternal diet. Protein content is generally unchanged, only slightly under some conditions. Lactose, mineral, trace element and electrolyte concentrations appear constant in the milk. The need for more studies in this area is great, particularly since older studies were limited in design and analytical methods. Further research of nutrient interactions, homeostatic mechanisms and energy balance may facilitate strategies for nutrition intervention and provide dietary guidelines for lactating women.(jd-b)
