A nutritional analysis of food provided to royal naval personnel at sea

A nutritional value of foodstuffs offered from Royal Naval sources to serviceman in a sample of British warships was investigated in order to assess whether or not they were in accordance with recent governmental guidelines. The hypothesis tested was that the diet provided to men at sea contained levels of sugars and fats which are greater than, and a level of fiber which was less than, recommendations of the National Advisory Council on Nutrition Education and Chief Medical Officer's Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy. It was found that the nutritional content of the food provided compares unfavorably with the dietary guidelines recommended by expert committees. The diet was fouund to contain high levels of fats and sugars. The caloric intakes were high in relation to tasks performed by the young adult servicemen at sea. Further research in needed to determine how great the effect of this type of feeding may be on morale and efficiency.
